Preparing Glasgow To Host Fashion Week 2007
Glasgow is getting ready for its close-up at a four-day festival of fashion as several emerging fashion designers will get the opportunity to showcase their talents along with the top high-street collections at Fashion Week 2007. The city will be home to an annual four-day event which will bring together top designers, high-street collections and unknown fashion designers in a mix of catwalk shows, workshops, and seminars at the end of March in George Square.
George Square will be style central for the showcase event, with a marquee for the glamour runway shows, and a big-screen for the public to watch interviews and behind-the-scenes action.
The week, to be held annually, re-affirms the city’s reputation as “Scotland with Style”. Its director, Yemi Adegite, said: “We took inspiration from local fashion weeks such as São Paulo in Brazil which have been very successful.”
“The idea came about three years ago when I realised that Glasgow and Scotland didn’t have their own fashion event like these other cities. After talking to friends in the fashion industry, we decided to go ahead with the idea.”
Although Scotland has been a host for several big events such as the Edinburgh Fashion Festival, the Scottish Fashion Awards, and the Scottish Style Awards, the fashion show will be the first for solely Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland and one of the most stylish cities in Europe.
Glasgow is Britain’s third most popular retail center, after London and Birmingham. As well as top designers and high street stores, the event will focus on 10 unknown Scottish designers each day, whose work will be exhibited in a series of catwalk shows.
The organisers have already approached Glasgow School of Art and Edinburgh School of Art to find fresh young talent for the event.
